  13. Pee-wee's Misadventure

  15. <p>A well-publicized arrest in Florida amounts to a very bad career
  16. move for the kiddie star
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     His hyperkinetic nerdiness was irresistible to millions of
  19. children. Pee-wee Herman was a grownup version of little
  20. brother: winsome, goofy, capable of saying dumb things and
  21. beatifically happy with the panorama of this world. When Pee-wee
  22. talked to inanimate objects, like chairs, they talked back,
  23. which, as everyone under 10 knows, is just what they are
  24. supposed to do. This man-boy with the tight suit, googly eyes
  25. and lipsticked mouth was not every parent's cup of tea: add a
  26. leer and the little guy could pass for the emcee of a Berlin
  27. nightclub, circa 1935. But few had any qualms about their
  28. offspring spending time in his company: at the movies (Pee-wee's
  29. Big Adventure, Big Top Pee-wee) or watching Pee-wee's Playhouse,
  30. the Emmy Award-winning Saturday-morning TV show that has run on
  31. CBS since 1986.

  33. <p>     The network canceled his series in April--the summer
  34. slot was to have been filled out with reruns--and last week
  35. Pee-wee was effectively slaughtered by bad publicity. The news
  36. got out that Paul Reubens, 39, the actor who created and played
  37. the Pee-wee character for more than 10 years, had been arrested
  38. in a Sarasota, Fla., porn-movie theater and charged with
  39. "exposure of sexual organs," which translates as masturbating.
  40. </p>
  41. <p>     Through his publicist, Reubens denied the accusation, but
  42. that little detail hardly registered among the seismic
  43. aftershocks of the original arrest. Reubens' mug shots made the
  44. front pages; heavy psychological hitters like Dr. Lee Salk and
  45. Dr. Joyce Brothers were enlisted to advise parents on what to
  46. tell the kids. The radio and TV airwaves were suddenly alive
  47. with Pee-wee jokes (His favorite baseball team? The Montreal
  48. Expos. His next television project? A remake of Diff'rent
  49. Strokes). CBS yanked the five remaining repeat episodes of
  50. Pee-wee's Playhouse, and the Disney-MGM Studios pulled a
  51. two-minute clip including Pee-wee that was being shown during
  52. backstage tours of its theme park in Orlando.
  53. </p>
  54. <p>     Courageous moves by these entertainment giants, no doubt
  55. protecting an unsuspecting public from...what exactly? The
  56. contumely heaped upon Pee-wee--while George Bush and Mikhail
  57. Gorbachev met in Moscow to reduce nuclear arsenals, and while
  58. severed human heads and scattered skeletal remains were being
  59. traced to a mass murderer in Milwaukee--can be seen as a
  60. trifle excessive. If Reubens is guilty of anything, it is of
  61. making a very bad career move. Solitary sexual acts performed
  62. in public, even in a darkened movie theater showing fare
  63. expressly designed to stimulate sexual acts, are a legal no-no.
  64. For people whose livelihood depends on public image, committing
  65. such deeds where those individuals are likely to be recognized
  66. carries a heavier penalty, which, in Reubens' case, seems to be
  67. a kangaroo court, public hanging and quick burial on TV boot
  68. hill.

  70. <p>     Not everyone is happy about his execution. Peggy Charren,
  71. founder and president of Action for Children's Television in
  72. Cambridge, Mass., says the issue has been overblown in the press
  73. and criticizes CBS's rush to judgment: "It begins to smack of
  74. McCarthyism, where people were being pulled off the air before
  75. they were convicted of anything." Perhaps the real crime, the
  76. one for which Reubens has been so relentlessly pilloried, was
  77. the successful pretense of childishness. The kids always knew
  78. he was playing, but, evidently, not many adults did. Ordinary
  79. show-business thugs and malefactors can get away with a lot, but
  80. God help the one who pretends to be innocent.
